Loperamide tablets are a reliable over-the-counter medication specifically formulated to effectively manage diarrhea. Each tablet contains 2 mg of loperamide hydrochloride, which works by slowing down gut movement, allowing for greater absorption of fluids and electrolytes. This helps to reduce the frequency of bowel movements and solidify stools, providing rapid relief from symptoms associated with both acute and chronic diarrhea.
Loperamide is a drug that slows down the propulsive peristalsis of the intestine, and also increases the time of passage of intestinal contents through the digestive tract and the ability of the intestinal wall to absorb liquid.
Loperamide hydrochloride increases the tone of the anal sphincter, thereby reducing fecal incontinence and the urge to defecate. Indications for symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and children over 12 years of age; symptomatic treatment of acute episodes of diarrhea caused by irritable bowel syndrome in adults aged 18 years and older after the initial diagnosis by a physician.
Loperamide is not indicated for the initial treatment of severe diarrhea associated with decreased fluid and electrolyte levels. In particular, in children, it is desirable to compensate for this loss by prescribing parenteral or oral replacement therapy.
Tablets should be taken without chewing, with water.
Symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and children over 12 years of age
The initial dose is 2 tablets (4 mg), then 1 tablet (2 mg) after each subsequent liquid bowel movement. The usual dose is 3-4 tablets (6-8 mg) per day. The maximum daily dose for acute diarrhea should not exceed 6 tablets (12 mg).
Symptomatic treatment of acute attacks of diarrhea due to irritable bowel syndrome in adults aged 18 years and older after initial diagnosis by a physician
The initial dose is two tablets (4 mg); in the future, take 1 tablet (2 mg) after each case of liquid stools or according to the previous recommendations of the doctor. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 6 tablets (12 mg).
In acute diarrhea, if there is no clinical improvement within 48 hours, loperamide should be discontinued.
From the side of the nervous system: headache.
From the side of the digestive tract: constipation, flatulence, nausea.
From the side of the nervous system: dizziness.
From the digestive tract: dry mouth, flatulence, abdominal pain and discomfort, vomiting, upper abdominal pain, dyspepsia.
Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance may occur in patients with diarrhea, especially children, debilitated patients, and the elderly. In such cases, the most important measure is the use of replacement therapy to replenish fluid and electrolytes.
The use of the drug does not replace the introduction of an appropriate amount of fluid and restoration of electrolytes.
It is not recommended to take this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The drug should be used in children over 12 years of age for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea.
It is recommended to take this drug with caution when driving a car or working with mechanisms.
In case of overdose (including relative overdose due to impaired liver function), depression of the central nervous system (stupor, incoordination, drowsiness, miosis, muscle hypertonus, respiratory depression), urinary retention and a complex of symptoms similar to intestinal obstruction may occur.
Simultaneous administration of loperamide (in a dose of 16 mg) together with inhibitors of P-glycoprotein (quinidine, ritonavir) led to an increase in the level of loperamide in blood plasma by 2-3 times. The clinical significance of the indicated pharmacokinetic interaction when using loperamide in recommended doses is unknown.
Store in the original packaging at a temperature not higher than 25ºС.
Keep out of the reach of children.
