Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics. The drug is a combination of two antacids (calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate) and sodium alginate, which has an adsorbing and enveloping effect. After administration, the drug quickly reacts with gastric acid, forming a layer of alginic acid gel, which has an almost neutral pH value and covers the walls of the stomach, effectively preventing the occurrence of reflux. In severe cases, the gel layer, distributed over the surface of the stomach contents, rises into the esophagus and prevents its irritation.

Calcium carbonate neutralizes stomach acid and provides rapid relief from indigestion and heartburn. This effect is enhanced by sodium bicarbonate, which also has a neutralizing effect. The total neutralizing capacity of the product at a minimum dose of 10 ml is about 10 mEq H +.

Pharmacokinetics. The mechanism of action of the drug is physical and does not depend on absorption into the systemic bloodstream.

Indication

Treatment of reflux symptoms associated with the acidity of stomach contents that flows back into the esophagus, such as acid regurgitation, heartburn, indigestion, for example, after eating or during pregnancy.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity (allergy) to any component of the drug.

The medicine is intended for oral use.

Gaviscon Double Action, suspension. Adults and children over 12 years of age – 10-20 ml (2-4 teaspoons) after meals and before bedtime, up to 4 times a day. Shake before use. Dose should not be adjusted for elderly patients.

Special instructions

Each 4 tablets of the drug contain 221.5 mg (9.64 mmol) of sodium, and each 10 ml of suspension contains 127.25 mg (5.53 mmol) of sodium. This should be taken into account in patients on a highly controlled salt diet, for example in some cases of congestive heart failure and renal failure.

Each 4 tablets contain 300 mg (7.5 mmol) of calcium, and each 10 ml of suspension contains 130 mg (3.25 mmol) of calcium. The drug should be used with caution in patients with hypercalcemia, nephrocalcinosis and recurrent formation of calcium-containing kidney stones.

Gaviscon Double Action, suspension contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 216), which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed).

Gaviscon Double Action tablets contain xylitol, which may have a laxative effect. The energy value of 1 g of xylitol is 2.4 kcal.

Side effects

Very rarely (1/10,000) in patients with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, an allergic reaction may occur in the form of urticaria, bronchospasm, anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions.
