Pharmacological properties

Phthalylsulfathiazole (2-(para-phthalylaminobenzenesulfamido)-thiazole) is a sulfonamide drug that has a bacteriostatic effect, the mechanism of which is due to the disruption of the synthesis of their growth factors – folic and dihydrofolic acids – in microorganisms. It is slowly absorbed from the digestive tract when taken orally, the main amount of the drug is retained in the intestine, where the active (sulfanamide) part of the molecule is gradually cleaved. The high concentration of the drug in the intestine achieved in this way, taking into account the specific bacteriostatic activity against the intestinal flora, determines the high effectiveness of phthalylsulfathiazole in intestinal infections. The drug is low-toxic.

Indication

Acute dysentery, chronic dysentery in the acute phase, colitis, including ulcerative, enterocolitis, gastroenteritis, intestinal surgery (to prevent purulent complications), amoebic dysentery and paratyphoid infection (as an adjuvant).

Application

Inside. In acute dysentery, adults are prescribed 6 g/day on the 1st-2nd day (1 g every 4 hours), 4 g/day on the 3rd-4th day (1 g every 6 hours), 3 g/day on the 5th-6th day (1 g every 8 hours). The course dose is 25-30 g. 5-6 days after the 1st course of treatment, the 2nd course is carried out: 1st-2nd day – 1 g every 4 hours (at night – after 8 hours), a total of 5 g per day; 3rd-4th day – 1 g every 4 hours (not prescribed at night), a total of 3 g per day. The total dose for the 2nd course is 21 g; with a mild course of the disease, it can be reduced to 18 g. Higher doses for adults orally: single – 2 g, daily – 7 g. Children under 3 years of age are prescribed the drug at the rate of 0.2 g/kg per day; the daily dose during the day is divided into 3 equal parts, taken during wakefulness. The drug is taken in this dose for 7 days. Children over 3 years of age (depending on age) are prescribed 0.4-0.75 g per dose 4 times a day.

In other diseases, the drug is prescribed to adults in the first 2-3 days at 1-2 g every 4-6 hours, in the next 2-3 days – in half the dose. Children are prescribed on the 1st day at the rate of 0.1 g/kg per day. The drug is taken in equal doses every 4 hours with a break for the night. In the following days, 0.2-0.5 g is prescribed every 6-8 hours.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity to the drug, Graves’ disease, blood diseases, acute hepatitis.
