Picosen is a combined contact laxative, for constipation or cases requiring ease of defecation.
Composition
- active substances: 1 capsule contains: sodium picosulfate 7.5 mg; dry cassia leaf extract (Cassiae folium extractum siccum) (4–6:1) (extractant — methanol 60%, v/v) (filler: glucose, spray-dried 1–30%) 10 mg;
- auxiliary substances: povidone K-25, lactose monohydrate, corn starch, magnesium stearate;
- hard gelatin capsule: gelatin, titanium dioxide (E 171), iron oxide (E 172), azorubin (E 122).
Contraindication
- hypersensitivity to the active substances, other triarylmethanes or to any of the auxiliary substances of the medicinal product;
- dynamic or mechanical intestinal obstruction, intestinal obstruction, abdominal pain of unknown origin, acute surgical diseases of the abdominal organs (for example, acute appendicitis, nonspecific ulcerative colitis), acute inflammatory bowel diseases;
- acute abdominal pain, accompanied by nausea and vomiting, which may indicate the above-mentioned acute diseases, the condition after surgery on the gastrointestinal tract;
Method of application
Adults and children over 12 years of age should take 1 capsule 1 time a day at night, in order to have a bowel movement the next morning.
PICOSEN should not be used daily or for prolonged periods without determining the cause of constipation.
Features of application
The gelatin capsule contains azorubin (E 122), which can cause allergic reactions.
PICOSEN contains lactose and glucose, therefore, if the patient has an intolerance to some sugars, he should consult his doctor before taking this medicine.

For safety reasons, it is advisable not to use PICOSEN during pregnancy.
Children
Do not prescribe the medicine to children under 12 years of age.
Drivers
Patients should be warned about the possibility of developing vasovagal reactions (especially abdominal spasm) such side effects as dizziness and/or syncope. In the event of an abdominal spasm, the patient should avoid such potentially dangerous activities as driving a motor vehicle or working with mechanisms.
Overdose
PICOSEN, like other laxatives, with long-term overdose can lead to chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain, hypokalemia, secondary hyperaldosteronism, and the formation of kidney stones. With long-term abuse of laxatives, damage to renal tubules, metabolic alkalosis, and muscle weakness as a result of hypokalemia have been reported.
Side effects
From the side of the immune system: allergic reactions.
From the side of the skin and subcutaneous tissue: hypersensitivity reactions, including angioneurotic edema, skin rashes, urticaria, itching, local and generalized exanthema, toxicoderma.
From the gastrointestinal tract: indigestion, anorexia, intestinal pseudomelanosis, diarrhea, flatulence, vomiting, nausea, spasms and abdominal pain, pain in the stomach and anus, which disappear when the dose of the drug is reduced.
From the side of water and electrolyte balance: dehydration, hypokalemia, hypocalcemia. Long-term and excessive use of the drug can lead to loss of fluid, potassium and other electrolytes. This, in turn, can lead to muscle weakness and heart failure, especially when the drug is used simultaneously with diuretics or corticosteroids.
Storage conditions
Store in the original packaging at a temperature not higher than 25 ºС. Keep out of the reach of children.
