Pharmacological properties

Acyclovir belongs to antiviral agents that are highly effective against herpesviruses, especially herpes simplex viruses type I and II, as well as herpes zoster virus. After entering a cell infected with the herpes virus, acyclovir is converted into the active triphosphate of acyclovir. Its activity is associated with disruption of the synthesis of herpesvirus DNA in a human cell due to inhibition of the function of viral DNA polymerase. Acyclovir does not affect other cellular processes that are not associated with the synthesis of viral DNA. The pharmacokinetics of the drug have not been studied, but, given the literature data, acyclovir in the form of a cream has a very low level of systemic absorption, even with repeated use.

Indication

Infections of the lips and face caused by the herpes simplex virus (herpes labialis).

Application

Adults and children over 12 years of age apply Aherp cream to the affected areas 5 times a day at 4-hour intervals, except at night. It is important to start treatment as early as possible after the first symptoms of the disease appear. The minimum duration of treatment is 4 days. If healing has not occurred during this time, treatment is continued for up to 10 days. If recovery has not occurred within 10 days, you should consult a doctor.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity to acyclovir, other components of the drug or valacyclovir.

Side effects

The drug is generally well tolerated, but in some cases temporary sharp or burning pain at the site of application may occur. Rarely, slight drying and peeling of the skin, erythema and itching may occur. Very rarely, contact dermatitis may develop, and in some cases, angioedema after topical application of acyclovir cream.

Special instructions

Aherp cream should only be used for herpetic lesions of the mucous membrane of the lips and facial skin. It is not recommended to apply the drug to the mucous membranes of the oral cavity, eyes and genitals. In case of particularly pronounced manifestations of the disease, it is necessary to consult a doctor. Usually, in the presence of herpetic lesions in people with immunodeficiency states, systemic treatment with antiviral agents is prescribed, therefore, in such cases, Aherp should not be used independently without consulting a doctor.

Accidental contact of the cream with the eyes should be avoided. If there are open lesions on the lips, it should be borne in mind that the herpes simplex virus can be transmitted to other persons by contact.

Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Aherp is used during pregnancy and breastfeeding if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or child.

Children: Aherp is not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age due to insufficient studies.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving vehicles or working with other mechanisms. Studies have not been conducted.
