Pharmacological properties

Acyclovir is an antiviral drug that has high in vitro activity against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. The toxic effect on host cells is minimal. Upon entering cells infected with the herpes virus, acyclovir is phosphorylated to form the active compound acyclovir triphosphate. The first stage of this process depends on the presence of virus-encoded thymidine kinase. Acyclovir triphosphate acts as an inhibitor and substrate for viral DNA polymerase, preventing further synthesis of viral DNA without affecting normal cellular processes.

Pharmacokinetic studies have shown minimal systemic absorption of acyclovir after repeated topical application of Zovirax cream.

Indication

Infections of the lips and face caused by the herpes simplex virus (herpes labialis).

Application

The drug is intended for external use only.

Children over 12 years of age and adults should apply Zovirax cream 5 times a day at approximately 4-hour intervals, except at night. It is important to start treatment as early as possible at the onset of infection, preferably during the prodromal period.

Treatment should last at least 4 days. If healing has not occurred, treatment can be continued for up to 10 days. If the symptoms of the disease do not disappear after 10 days of treatment, the patient should consult a doctor.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity to acyclovir and other components of the drug, as well as to valacyclovir.

Side effects

Some patients may experience a transient, sharp or burning pain when using Zovirax cream. Approximately 5% of patients have experienced mild dryness and peeling of the skin. A small number of patients have experienced redness (erythema) and itching. Very rarely, contact dermatitis has been reported after using the cream. In sensitivity tests, these cases were more often associated with the components of the cream base than with acyclovir. There have been isolated reports of immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema, following topical use of acyclovir.

Necessary safety precautions during use. Accidental contact of the cream with the eyes should be avoided.

Patients with herpes labialis should be warned against contact transmission of the virus to other people, especially if there are open lesions.

Special instructions

Zovirax cream should only be used to treat herpes on the lips and face. It is not recommended to apply Zovirax cream to the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes, or to treat genital herpes. People with particularly severe manifestations of herpes labialis should consult a doctor.

Zovirax cream is not recommended for use in immunocompromised patients. Such individuals should seek medical advice regarding the treatment of any infection.

Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the drug is recommended to be used only if the benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk.

Children: There is insufficient data on the safety of the drug in children under 12 years of age, therefore it is recommended to use the drug in children over 12 years of age.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving vehicles or working with other mechanisms. No data.

Interactions

Interactions have not been established.

Overdose

No adverse effects have been observed following accidental oral or topical administration of an entire 2 g tube of Zovirax cream containing 100 mg of acyclovir.

Storage conditions
