Selenium is an important trace element with antioxidant properties, necessary to maintain the proper functioning of the human body.

In human blood plasma, selenium binds to glutathione peroxidase and a selenium-transporting protein known as selenoprotein P, in the form of the amino acid selenocysteine.

Selenium contains glutathione peroxidase, which is a component of the antioxidant defense system of cells. There is a known inverse relationship between the level of selenium in the blood and the likelihood of developing cardiovascular diseases (cardiac myopathy, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction).

The thyroid gland is one of the main organs that requires an additional source of selenium. Selenium helps reduce the level of antibodies to thyroperoxidase in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis.
