Pharmacological properties
Doxylamine (n, n-dimethyl-2 [1-phenyl-1 (pyridinyl) ethoxy] ethanolamine) is a stimulant of the class of ethanolamines from the group of histamine h1-receptor blockers, has a sedative and m-cholinergic effect. shortens the time to fall asleep, increases the duration and quality of sleep, while not changing the phase structure of sleep.
Doxylamine succinate is well absorbed from the digestive tract, biotransformation is carried out in the liver. The main part of doxylamine (about 60%) is excreted in unchanged form with urine, part – with feces.
Indication
Insomnia and other sleep disorders.
Application
It is prescribed only to adults and adolescents over 15 years of age, 1 tablet 15-30 minutes before bedtime. depending on the individual reaction of the patient, the dose of the drug can be reduced to 1/2 tablet or increased to 2 tablets.
Contraindication
Glaucoma, disorders of the urethra and prostate gland, period of breastfeeding (it is necessary to stop breastfeeding when taking the drug), age up to 15 years, increased sensitivity to the drug.
Side effects
Associated with the cholinoblocking effect of the drug – a feeling of dryness in the mouth, accommodation disturbances, constipation, difficulty urinating (especially in patients with a tendency to these phenomena).
Special instructions
Use with caution in lung diseases. should not be prescribed to drivers (decreased attention, drowsiness).
Interactions
With simultaneous use with barbiturates, benzodiazepines, clonidine, opioid analgesics, neuroleptics, tranquilizers, an increase in the depressant effect on the central nervous system is observed. simultaneous use of Sondox with atropine or other blockers of m-cholinergic receptors increases the risk of anticholinergic side effects: dry mouth, difficulty urinating. alcohol increases the sedative effect of doxylamine, which can make it dangerous to drive vehicles and work with potentially dangerous mechanisms.
Overdose
Possible only when taken in very high doses. symptoms: mydriasis, hyperemia of the skin of the face, hyperthermia, excitement, incoordination, tremors, athetic movements, convulsions. in the absence of treatment, a coma may develop, accompanied by collapse.
Treatment is symptomatic. According to the evidence, anticonvulsant drugs are used and mechanical ventilation is carried out.
Storage conditions
In a dry place protected from light.
